The journey of a saree

From weaver to wearer, and on to the next hands

  1. The weaver

A family of Chanderi weavers designs and weaves the saree on a pit loom.

  2. The registry

Awalkhana hand-picks the saree and records the weaver’s lineage and the weave.

  3. The wearer

The saree arrives with its Cloth Memory and the care protocol.

  4. The next hands

Each custodian adds the occasions, memories and a message to the lineage ledger.

  5. The restoration

Every repair is logged, so the saree’s whole life stays on record.

Cloth Memory

Every saree carries its own archive

Each Awalkhana saree comes with its cloth memory, a personal and historical archive that lets you preserve the spirit and form of your saree as it travels across generations.

Sant Kabir’s lyrical Chanderi

चदरिया झीनी रे झीनी, राम नाम रस भीनी।
अष्ट कमल का चरखा बनाया, पाँच तत्व की पूनी।
नौ दस मास बुनन को लागे, मूरख मैली कीनी।

The cloth is woven fine, soaked in the essence of the Lord’s name. The loom is made of eight lotus petals, the yarn spun from the five elements. It takes nine or ten months to weave, yet the ignorant soil it with impurity.
